Article > How To Sell

Not everyone that uses an auction site will want to sell things, but if you do there are several things to keep in mind.

Register Early

Sites like eBay.co.uk provide buyers with lots of information on sellers. One such piece of information is whether you are a new user that has been registered for under a month. This is indicated by a small pair of sunglasses by your user id.

It is, therefore, recommended that you register with sites like eBay early, so when you do come to sell you will have lost the sunglasses icon that will make buyers wary. Here are some joining instructions for eBay.

Product Description

Make sure that you describe what you're selling precisely. Give a full, detailed description and provide a photo if possible. Let the user know exactly what you're selling, what you are charging for postage or anything else that could be considered important.

Don't try to cheat people, hide defects or be economical with the truth. Not only could you land yourself in trouble, but your reputation (described below) will be damaged and you will find that other people will not trade with you in the future.

Your Reputation

Your reputation is important when it comes to selling items. Buyers will always worry that you may not be a legitimate or honest seller as they do not know you and there are plenty of dishonest people out there. So having a good reputation will make people happier to deal with you and will mean you attract more bidders, resulting in higher prices as people bid against each other.

Auction sites like eBay allow people to leave comments on how well you have treated them when they buy from you. If you didn't deliver the goods, misled them in the product description or provided faulty/incorrect goods then they will leave a bad comment (in addition to demanding their money back) that future potential bidders will read.

You don't have to be specifically trying to swindle buyers to get negative comments. You may, for instance, sell a piece of china but not mention a noticable chip on it. The buyer will receive it and be extremely disappointed as you didn't mention it in the description. They will then leave a scathing report on you that will mean many people will be put off trading with you in the future.

To be a successful seller it is paramount that you have an excellent record for providing the goods quickly and as you described them.
